Worth its Cotton

Cotton is a remarkable material that transformed the entire garment industry. The fibers of the cotton plant are soft a supple but exhibit a durability that is uncommon for a natural organic material. Cotton is made into garment of all types. The user identifiable benefits are related to the comfort cotton provides when it is in contact with the skin. Fibers like the ones found in wool have an itchy component that must be addressed before it is purposed for skin contacting garments. Even with the most rigorous anti-itching protocol, wool remains somewhat uncomfortable against bare human skin. Individuals attempting to embrace the other positive wool characteristics purport to get used to the material’s prickliness, but an itchy reminder is often issued at intervals.

A wonderful alternative to an itchy wool garment is one made from cotton. Depending on the weave and application of the material, it can provide a luxurious silky feel against the skin. Socks are an excellent application for cotton fabrics. Sandwiched between the outer skin layer and a pair of firetrap shoes, a cotton sock provides the perfect balance of absorptive and comfort insuring properties. Bulky garments made of 100% cotton illicit a certain comfort quotient among wearers. In other instances a thin cotton layer is sought to buffer the skin from a synthetic or wool outer garment. Either way the purposeful comfort of a cotton woven garment cannot be dismissed as an underappreciated sideshow to more exotic fabrics. Cotton stands alone as the backbone of the garment industry
