Keep Warm with Thermal Clothing

Thermal clothing has been around for many years but, initially, was confined to items of underwear such as vests and combinations, or ‘Long Johns’ as they were known when they first appeared on the market.  Nowadays, there is so much choice that it is possible to wear a complete outfit specially fabricated to trap the body’s warmth in an insulating layer.

The beauty of thermal clothing is that it comprises thin comfortable-to-wear layers of material, which means that the wearer does not have to go about their day wearing thick heavy clothing.  The fabric used traps heat from the body but allows perspiration to pass through. Non-thermal clothing keeps perspiration close to the body which is both uncomfortable and unhygienic.

One of the most important features of thermal clothing is the lightness of the fabrics used, which makes them ideal for any situation.  They keep the wearer cool in the summer and warm in the winter and, having first been used by the military for many years, the benefits for everyone soon became apparent.  They are ideal for those who feel the cold, mainly the elderly who cannot move around as freely as they used to, and they are especially useful to those who enjoy outdoor physical pursuits which, more often than not, take place in cold weather.  Mountaineers and skiers, for example, can keep as warm as necessary without having to wear bulky layers that would restrict their movements.

For most people, thermal underwear will be all they need for keeping warm in winter because the initial heat-trapping qualities close to the body will work to keep them at a constant temperature.  For others, there are thermal outer garments that add layers but not bulk, increasing the body’s natural warmth and, again, maintaining a constant comfortable core temperature that enables them to cope with the harshest weather conditions.

Thermal clothing makes the coldest of weather bearable for everyone who wears it.
